the country right now, do you that damages mitt romney? it's getting a lot of play nationwide. it really is. you can't take that away. do you think that's damaging? >> people are entitled to their opinion. this is a free country. it's free speech. i personally accept the numbers as they are. we need to be talking about the issues. the facts, there are still over 20 million people out of work. gas has doubled under this president. >> okay. scott, let's move on to you. florida's unemployment rate stands at 8.8%, one point higher than the national average that came out yesterday. florida also tops the list of states. and some type of foreclosure process, 11%. has president obama done enough to bring back florida's economy? >> well, what we're seeing here in florida is that people do feel better. they feel like we are in a recovery. things are on the move. we are moving forward. and that's really the great thing. what people are asking themselves is that four years ago in september of 2008, this country lost over 150,000 jobs. in september of 2012, we gained 114,000 jobs. that's the great news.

. in many ways that's happening because of early voting all right. so romney needs to change the trajectory in some way. now, that washington post is actually good news for romney in a sense he is winning the expectations game. people assume that obama will be better. so that may mean he doesn't have to do as well as all that to surprise people and say this guy is really up to the job. but the pressure is really on romney to change the direction of this race and to, you know, let people know it's not necessarily over. that can be done in various debates. but this first one is going to form the most impressions. >> john harwood says only twice have these televised debates seemed to shift the outcome of the race. in 2004 george w. bush went up against al gore. in gore's case, a strategist thought he lost that debate in the spin room. so i wonder, matt, how much of this is decided by what the candidates actually say? and how much by the pundits the day after? >> i give the american people some credit. i think they can listen and watch. and most evidence has shown that people start paying atten

ended up putting even more pressure on romney. >> i think the expectations for the debate are too high. particularly conservative republican americans are expecting mitt romney to go out there and do something and i don't know whether that as even possible right now. the first debate means everything. the whole world is watching this thing. this is a big, big debate on wednesday night. this is much bigger than the mccain-obama debate. >> today mitt romney traveled from boston to colorado where the debate will be held as a major player in romney's fund raiser confirmed to fox business that a few new york donors have backed away from financial commitments to the romney campaign and instead said they will spend their money to help the republicans hold on to the house of represents and pick up seats in the senate. the debates will be very important, said one person with knowledge of the matter. if romney does well, that money could come back. >>> new jersey's governor, chris christie the current front runner for the presidential nomination 2016 has decided his job is to state the obvious.
